Sydney Airport Tunnel, Sydney NSW

To comply with new safety requirements, Sydney Airport was required to provide a Runway End Safety Area (RESA) at the end of its runways. The $100 million investment in this project will result in safer air travel and significant and lasting benefits for the community and travelling public. Spanning the M5 tunnel and Sydney's largest sewer culvert, the RESA was constructed on a series of land-bridges, making it Australia's  first suspended concrete RESA deck. The project challenges included: A380 and future increased loads; the need to minimise the period of restricted runway use; construction over a heritage listed and fragile sewer; and the construction restrictions of a busy international airport on the bank of the Cooks River. The lighting solution takes into account the standards for tunnel lighting and the physical features of the tunnel including daylight portals. Aurecon Australia worked closely with Pierlite Australia to provide a cost effective and technically compliant lighting solution. The projects successful completion, within time and budget, allows Sydney Airport to continue to function as a major international airport: complying with international safety standards; accommodating new aircraft; and enabling safe operation.
