August 2011 - The Cloud

Unusual structures often require unusual lighting designs, as was the case with the New Zealand project affectionately referred to as "The Cloud". The construction of this building on the Auckland waterfront, which is planned as the entertainment hub for the 2011 World Cup Rugby Union tournament, provided the design team at Gerard Lighting NZ a unique challenge. The physical nature of the construction with its twisting shape created many challenges for the lighting designers. In brief, the lighting concept was to illuminate the building in such a way as to allow it to glow and stand out on the waterfront as an iconic architectural statement.

The solution: five hundred (500) DALI controlled coloured fluorescent lamps installed in Pierlite BWPT/5 luminaires installed along the twisting structure on both sides of the building. A unique self adhesive mounting system designed and manufactured by the team at Gerard Lighting NZ was used to avoid drilling of the beams and to provide an even colour distribution onto the canvas surface. The result... a fantastic outcome. For more information contact: lighting@gerardlighting.co.nz
